Why Classic SEO Is No Longer Enough

Google increasingly answers queries directly in the SERP — through AI snippets, featured snippets, and SGE. Users get their answer without visiting the site. That means the classic SEO toolkit — keywords, meta tags, backlinks — is no longer sufficient. Your content now needs to be citable — AI systems must pick your site as the source of the answer. We covered this topic in detail in our AEO/GEO strategy article.

For this new reality, the term GEO — Generative Engine Optimization emerged. And an open source tool has appeared that automates site audits against GEO metrics via Claude Code. It is called geo-seo-claude, and in this article we break down what it does, which blind spots it surfaces, and where its limits are.

What Is GEO and How It Differs from SEO

Classic SEO optimizes a site for search bots: indexing, load speed, keywords, link mass. The goal is to reach the top 10 of Google SERPs and earn a click.

GEO optimizes a site for AI systems: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Bing Copilot, Claude. The goal is to have the AI assistant cite your site when a user asks a question. The difference is fundamental: in SEO you fight for the click, in GEO you fight for the citation. A user may get the answer from your content without ever visiting your site. When that does not happen, your site is invisible to ChatGPT.

What Drives AI Citability

  • Structured data — Schema.org markup (Organization, Article, FAQ, HowTo).
  • Clear answers — a Q&A format in the content, short theses.
  • Domain authority — age, backlinks, expert authors.
  • Brand mentions — on external platforms and knowledge bases.
  • Correct heading hierarchy — H1 → H2 → H3 without gaps.
  • AI crawler access — permissions in robots.txt.

geo-seo-claude — An Audit in One Command

geo-seo-claude is a skill for Claude Code that runs a full site audit against SEO and GEO metrics. It installs as a skill and launches with one command from the console. What the Skill Analyzes

Citability Score. A 0-100 score measuring how suitable your content is for AI citation. The skill checks answer structure, FAQ blocks, clarity of wording, paragraph length. Walls of text with no subheadings score low.

AI crawlers. Checks whether GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and Google-Extended are allowed via robots.txt. This is a critical check: many sites accidentally block AI crawlers because hosting added rules by default or because the owner copied a template without understanding it.

Schema markup. Analyzes structured data — whether Organization, Article, FAQ, HowTo, Product are present. Suggests which schemas to add and why. For AI systems, microdata is one of the strongest signals.

Brand mentions. Searches for your brand on external platforms. For AI systems, the volume and quality of mentions is an authority signal. The logic is similar to Google, but weights are distributed differently.

Content audit. Evaluates readability, heading structure, and whether you answer typical user questions. Checks whether your content uses the "answer-units" format — short 40-80 word blocks with a clear answer to a specific question.

Report. You get an HTML or PDF report with scores per category and concrete fix recommendations. Not just a list — an action plan with priorities.

How to Install and Run

Installation takes a minute. You need Claude Code (Anthropic's CLI) and terminal access.

  1. Install via npx: npx skills add zubair-trabzada/geo-seo-claude
  2. Or manually: clone the repo and copy the skills folder into ~/.claude/skills/.
  3. Restart Claude Code.
  4. Run with a regular prompt: "Run a GEO-SEO audit on example.com".

Claude Code loads the pages, analyzes structure, checks robots.txt, Schema markup, and generates a report. No API keys, no third-party integrations — everything runs locally through the agent.

What We Find on Real Sites

We ran the audit on several client projects and our own resources. The results are sobering even for technically competent teams:

  • robots.txt blocked ClaudeBot and GPTBot on three of five projects — owners did not even know hosting added these rules by default.
  • No Schema markup at all — no Organization, no Article, no FAQPage.
  • FAQ sections were missing on service pages — yet those are what AI systems cite most often.
  • Headings were nested incorrectly: H1 → H3 → H2. For parsers this is mush, and the skill catches it immediately.
  • Meta descriptions were duplicated on 40% of pages — a low-quality-content signal for AI systems.

Report recommendations usually fit into 2-4 hours of developer work: add FAQ Schema, unblock AI crawlers, add Organization Schema with core company data, restructure headings. The effect shows 2-4 weeks after reindexing. This aligns well with our thesis that business needs results, not just models.

Tool Limitations

Young project. At the time of writing, the repo has around ten GitHub stars and a handful of commits. It is a proof of concept, not an enterprise solution. For corporate audits, humans still make sense.

Tied to Claude Code. Runs only inside Claude Code. You cannot invoke it as a standalone script or wire it into CI/CD without hacks.

Does not replace a professional audit. The tool is good at technical issues — robots.txt, microdata, heading structure. But it does not analyze backlink profile, does not benchmark competitors, does not look at behavioral factors, and does not build an intent map for your niche. For deep work you still need a human with context.

GEO as a field is unstable. Nobody knows exactly how ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity rank sources for citation. Recommendations rest on the current industry understanding, which shifts every few months alongside model updates.

Alternatives

If you don't want to tie yourself to Claude Code, there are options:

  • Ahrefs / SEMrush — for classic SEO audits. Paid, powerful, but GEO metrics are still mostly absent.
  • Google Search Console — free baseline monitoring of indexing and technical issues.
  • Schema.org Validator — quick check of structured data on a specific page.
  • Manual prompt in Claude or ChatGPT — feed the page HTML and ask it to evaluate AI citability. Works for one-off single-page checks.

The advantage of geo-seo-claude is that it automates the whole pipeline and outputs a structured report. For systematic monitoring of many pages, that is much more convenient than manual prompts.

Who Needs This Right Now

If you run a company site and see organic Google traffic stagnating or dropping — that is a signal. Users increasingly get answers from AI assistants. A GEO audit will show whether your content is visible to these systems at all and which technical barriers to remove first. For sites with steady content (blogs, help centers, product pages), the effect of proper optimization is especially visible.

Yes. Ranking top in Google does not guarantee that ChatGPT or Perplexity will cite you. These are different ranking mechanics, and losing AI traffic in 2026 means ceding ground to competitors.
